My First Leap

Yeah, that’s me. No, not the cool dude on top, the open mouthed fool wearing winter gloves on a beautiful day.  I always said I wanted to go skydiving- you know, when the topic came up and I wanted to sound cool. But like most people I didn’t plan to actually leap out of an airplane… that would be crazy!

“One day I’ll switch careers and do something I’m passionate about.”

“One day I’ll go back to school and finish my degree.”

“One day I’ll quit my job and start my own business.”

“One day I’ll take time for myself and go travelling.”

In 2008, someone finally called me on my big talking ways. It went like something like this…”Oh really? I can take you up this afternoon!” Turns out I was talking to a leaping professional and he wasn’t about to take no for an answer. Three hrs later I was suiting up, acknowledging with a signature that I could die doing this and before I knew it I was 14,000 feet up, about to take the biggest leap of my life.

Looking back, I could never have leapt alone. It was tandem or stay grounded. For my own safety (and liability of the Skydiving company) I needed a pro literally strapped to my back to ensure I landed safe. Nothing could have prepared me for the euphoria I felt during this monstrous leap and unbridled joy I had upon landing safe.

Later that year, I took a bigger leap when I quit my job, sold my house and my amazing leaper of a wife Angie and I took our 3 young kids backpacking through Europe. The following year we took an even bigger leap when we moved our family to Vancouver Island and started a landscaping business in a recession, with no start up money and no experience in landscaping or business. I’ve been leaping for the past 10 years, which means I’m a pro.

So…you say you want quit your job, change careers or do some travelling? Let’s leap!
